Chabot Space Center

Chabot Space & Science Center has inspired future scientists in Oakland for 137 years. Located in Redwood Regional Park, among the largest stands of coastal redwoods in the Bay Area, the center offers a full dome planetarium, big screen theater, interactive exhibits, space artifacts, and the only research-level telescopes available for public viewings in the region.

In 2020, COVID-19 necessitated that they close their doors for general admission visits, but they’ve worked to overcome this challenge by doing a fantastic job of bringing people together virtually. Many lucky Oaklanders have spent some of their pandemic Saturday nights tuning in from their homes, to gaze through Chabot’s telescopes with astronomers on hand to answer questions and make observations.

This summer we were captivated by the rare Neowise comet and the Perseid meteor shower. Thanks to Chabot, we were able to come together virtually to observe, discuss and enjoy these awe inspiring astronomical events. Gathering online with science lovers and space enthusiasts has helped us nurture a feeling of community while staying socially distant.

Chabot Space & Science Center will continue to offer accessible, engaging opportunities to learn together so we can adapt to, and solve, some of our world’s most important emerging challenges. But, best of all, they’re helping unite under the umbrella of science during this difficult time. 

Like many organizations rooted in gathering and learning, Chabot has been hard hit by the pandemic, so Oaklandish is stepping up with more support at a time when science learning feels more important than ever.
